Holy houndstooth, Batman! That's one serious set of textiles being sported by "Vampire Diaries" star Nina Dobrev on the cover of Cosmopolitan, where the actress donned a smoking pair of heels and matching tube dress for her command appearance. And inside, she's got lots to talk about: from what she looks for in a guy (gentlemen, take note) to how she relates to her bestie, Julianne Hough.
It was just last week that we caught a glimpse of Nina and Julianne goofing off at Selena Gomez's birthday party, so it's no surprise to hear from Nina that their friendship is the real deal; she says that she and Julianne have bonded over their mutual love of an active lifestyle.
“It’s been cool to find an active buddy—there are lots of girlie girls around. We don’t talk about makeup; we talk about life," she explained. And before you ask: no, they're not bonding over their respective recent breakups with high-profile Hollywood men of a certain age. Nina said, "That’s not what our friendship is about. Unfortunately, that’s how it’s perceived, but there’s more to us. People aren’t defined by their relationships. The whole point is being true to yourself and not losing yourself in relationships, whether romances or friendships.”
That said, it's not like Nina isn't thinking about relationships, or her criteria for eventually getting into another one (she and longtime squeeze Ian Somerhalder called it quits in May). And if you do see her out and about with someone, chances are that it won't be a superficial fling.
She explained, "You either have chemistry or you don't, but a lot of what attracts me is a guy's mind and humor and talent. I need to get to know all those things before I fall for someone. I'm not a one-night-stand kind of girl. I'm a relationship girl."

And for those wondering what attracts Nina to any given dude, here's the dish from the woman herself:
"I’m progressive in some ways, old-fashioned in others. I like it when guys hold the door open and are sweet and thoughtful," she said. "The guys on our show are really good at that. A man in a suit looking put together and dapper is very attractive, but I also kind of like the I-just-rolled-out-of-bed, a-little-bit-of-scruff, effortless, not-trying-hard-but-still-sexy guy. If a guy spends more time looking in the mirror than I do, that’s a problem!"
So, to sum up: Own a suit, don't be vain, hold the door open, and... um, actually, maybe just be Paul Wesley or Zach Roerig? That should do it.
What do you think of Nina's houndstooth look in Cosmo?
